Why Become a Member of GHS?Since 1901, the Germantown Historical Society has led local efforts to preserve and protect the rich resources of our community. We have helped save local landmarks, such as the Deshler-Morris House and Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, and we maintain historic areas such as Market Square in central Germantown and the Lower Burial Ground (Hood Cemetery). We work to preserve Germantown Avenue and promote and coordinate cultural tourism among area historic sites. Our library houses the premier collection on the Wissahickon, genealogical information on thousands of local families, property deeds, maps, and information on community churches, schools and local organizations. We have collected thousands of museum and library artifacts and continue to collect 20th century historical material. Our local history collections are rated as one of the country's best. We offer an award-winning history camp for school children, and our adult programming explores race relations in light of local history.
